Ms Deborah Wong

I had an epiphany three quarters into my teaching career – it is not about studying hard, shoving concepts and model answers down children’s throats, making them efficient at calculation, but about guiding a brain in part of its learning process. A process that is a lot more fun and rewarding when you enjoy it, and understand what the end goal truly is.

The end goal is to discipline and teach your mind how to think. Mathematics trains your logical and analytical side. It is not just about formulas and regurgitating perfect solutions to ace your exams, but to sort out and strengthen your thought process, to help manage your life (present and future), and your decisions in the best way.

Children under my care will learn to be independent thinkers. It will take time to mature to that. But we will get to that stage and hopefully beyond where your child says, ‘I love to learn’.
